More Great Military Sites

Thanks for visiting Brainwavers. If you're new here and you like what you see, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. I hope you enjoy the site!

I ran across  two more sites that do a great job of honoring our military. The first, supportheroes.org, gives financial support to veterans and/or their families who struggle because of disabling injuries or death due to war.

The next, poetpatriot.com, has a ton of information that any patriot will enjoy reading. He has timelines, quotes, jokes, and tributes. I really enjoyed the patriot classroom section. Here you can find information on voting, the flag, and presidents, along with several other topics.

What About Bob?

I have spent the last hour or so researching Bob Barr, and I like most of what I have read. I don’t completely agree with all of his views, but I don’t completely agree with all of anyone’s views except my own. Barr was once a strong conservative who basically got fed up with the usual political games and joined the libertarian party.

Say What You Mean

In a time of politicians side stepping real questions and blowing smoke about issues, Bob Barr leaves very little gray area in his comments. With every question there is a very definitive answer. With most politicians taking a “stand for nothing fall for anything” approach to draw in the “undecided crowd”, Bob Barr speaks his mind and heart.

I can’t say that I am endorsing Barr, yet, but I can say that from what I have read he is the most impressive candidate still on the ballot.

Memorial Day In LaFargeville, New York

We came to Watertown, NY this week to attend the wedding of my wife’s cousin. I will have to write about the differences between northern and southern wedding receptions soon; just not now. While here we visited some of her family in LaFargeville for Memorial Day. This was an awesome event. This small town has a Memorial Day program that had more heart than any city ten times it’s size. We started out with a parade through the middle of town. It was a very short parade; I’ve seen longer lines at a McDonald’s drive thru. This town showed that size doesn’t matter. There were people lining the sidewalks along the parade route. As the last parade vehicle passed, people from the sidewalks fell in behind the parade and followed it several blocks to a military cemetary. Once everyone had gathered in the cemetary there were several speakers. Some spoke of our military and Memorial Day while others just prayed with the town.  The local high school band played our national anthem while the flag was raised, during which my son and I quitely observed with our hands over our hearts the way an American should. Next, there was a 21 gun salute to the fallen soldiers who died either while protecting me and my family, or after having served our country. It ended with a solemn rendition of “Taps” by a lone bugler.

I am grateful to have shared this Memorial Day with a small town that hasn’t forgotten.

Back To Basics

I realize that my readers have come to expect posts on politics, crime and punishment, patriotism, and such. While I am very passionate about these topics, I never intended this blog to be solely dedicated to them. I started this so that I could publish my thoughts on any and all topics. To my fellow Americans who enjoy the patriotic articles, do not fear. I still bleed red, white, and blue. I am going to diversify my topics, however. If you look at some of my earliest articles you will find education, kids, and nostalgia among other topics.

For a while I also included some affiliate programs on Brainwavers. I have removed those as well. I also got caught up in rankings, popularity, SEO, blah, blah, blah. While I know these are important for business, I was putting more effort into PR than into writing. While I may be venturing into some internet business someday, Brainwavers is not it. This is not a job, and I am going to stop treating it like one.

Great U.S. Military Information Site

I found some cool military photos that you will probably never see on any news channel. Most of these pics, which are located at MilitaryTimes,  show our military in a positive light. The good guys don’t usually make the cut when it comes to the good ol’ American media and the doom and gloom spin that they put on every story. You can check out more at FacesOfValor and Honor The Fallen.

That Feeling

Do you remember the feeling you had just weeks before your high school graduation?

What about getting ready to head out on you own? Away from your parents. Do you remember?

Maybe you have recently changed jobs and there was that strange “I won’t be walking down this hall”, or “I won’t use this coffee pot again” kind of feeling.

Buying your first home, or moving out of your first home into your second.

I’m not talking about any bad feelings. The feelings I’m talking about are ones of excitement; feelings that something that you have known is about to be replaced with something better. A new world is about to open up. A sense that there is something waiting that has barely been tapped.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about by now I don’t know any other way to describe it.

I had those feelings twice today. They weren’t accompanied by any visions or thoughts; just feelings. I know that all of you who have experienced this are sitting there nodding in agreement. All of you who think I’m losing it; I just ask that if you are ever fortunate enough to experience it you will recall reading an article by that crazy guy at Brainwavers and admit that he wasn’t so crazy after all.

Where did it all go?

We just celebrated my daughter’s eighth birthday, and I never had any idea that eight years could pass so rapidly. I was just driving home thinking about some of the events of 2000 and how they seem to have just happened. Here’s a few of the happenings of the year 2000.

We somehow miraculously avoid a global meltdown brought on by Y2K.

The St. Louis Rams defeat the Tennessee Titans 23-16 in Superbowl XXXIV in Atlanta. I actually had to watch this one in the hospital because of my daughter’s birth.

Alaskan Airline flight 261 crashes off of the coast of California killing 88 people.

An IED explodes on Wall Street injuring several but killing none.

Vladimir Putin is elected as Russia’s president.

George W. Bush and Al Gore emerge as their parties’ nominees for president.

Microsoft is found guilty of violating antitrust laws.

Federal agents seize Elian Gonzalez from his family’s home in Miami, Fl.

Windows ME is released.

2000 Summer Olympics are held in Sydney, Australia.

The first of the Subway Series, NY Yankees vs. NY Mets world series, is held. The Yankees won the series.

Iraq rejects UN weapons inspections.

George W. Bush is elected President of the United States despite a serious outbreak of hanging chads in Florida. (I hope they have developed a cream for that by now.)

Charles M. Shulz dies.

Recounts or no recounts? That was the question.

I know it’s only going to go faster from here. All I can do is enjoy it.

Merry Christmas Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee recently ran a television spot wishing Americans a Merry Christmas and out comes the very small but very loud group of anti-American, anti-Christmas, anti-everything whiners. “He shouldn’t use his political position to push his religion on us”, “It’s a political trick”, so on and so on. I’ll bet that if it were Hillary Clintonstein wishing a happy hanukkah, or Obama bin Laden wishing all of his fellow American-haters a Jolly Jihad, we wouldn’t hear a sound, not even a mouse. It’s Christmas, you know like when Christ was born, and I personally think it’s ok to run a Christmas ad wishing a Merry Christmas during Christmas. But that’s just me. Anyway, Merry Christmas Mike Huckabee and all else who celebrate the birth of the Savior of the world.

Brainwavers Gives Thanks

I thought that instead of a straight up “what I’m thankful for” I would do a “look at the bright side.” So the next time…

…I have to yell at my kids for jumping on the furniture, I’ll be thankful that I have healthy kids who can run and jump.

…I hear some freaks abusing their freedom of speech by bad mouthing the soldiers who gave them that freedom, I’ll be thankful that I can exercise that same freedom when I call them freaks.

…I can’t find the TV remote, I’ll be thankful that I can make my two kids look for it.

…I have to work with some idiot, I’ll be thankful that he isn’t thinking the same thing.

…I get frustrated working on our house, I’ll be thankful that I have the knowledge, skills, and money (that last one is a stretch) to build a new house.

Ok, so I’m subject to being humorous at times, or as my wife calls it a “sarcastic butthead”.

But in reality I am thankful for my God, my family, my country, and all of the blessings that I have. Happy Thanksgiving!

Diet Update: Week 6

I usually try to post my weekly updates on Friday or Saturday, but I’m a little late this week. I went camping with my son this weekend and that was the reason for: 1) I didn’t get to post an update, and 2) I only lost 1 pound. I enjoyed hobo dinners, hotdogs, chips, s’mores, and all of the other camping essentials. I’m back on track now, but I’m not worried about last week. The time we had camping was more than worth taking a break from my diet.

Week 6 weight: 357 pounds
Week 6 loss: 1 pound
Total loss: 29 pounds
