Four blocks stacked nice and straight. Check.
Blocks are sturdy and rigid, no shaking or wobbling. Check.
Top end of the board set squarely on the blocks. Check.
Bottom end of the board dug into the ground for security. Check.
Pedals in right position. Check.
Everyone’s watching. Block them out. Just focus.
Ok…go! Pedal harder! Come on, get your speed up! A few feet away now, stop pedaling. Balance is the key now. Just aim for the center of the ramp. Ok, front tire over the top, pull up slightly on the handlebars. Back tire over now, push down slightly on the handlebars now to even the bike out it the air. Man, what a rush! Ground coming up quick! Knees slightly bent, firm grip on the handlebars…touchdown! Slide sideways to a stop. Heart pounding. Look back to see if anyone else will try. No, they are pulling blocks down now. Back down to three or maybe only two. That’s right, this day belongs to you!

  1. Hey - I didn’t think you knew me when I was a kid. It sounds like maybe you might have been one of my fans. Next do an article about the huge crash that eventually makes you realize that you are mortal.

  2. I know that side of it too. I can remember several times when the bike went flying, and I ended up flat on my back thinking I would surely die if I didn’t get a breath soon.

  3. You didn’t say anything about popping a wheelie right at the beginning. And at the end I always liked to do a ‘double fishtail’, lock up the brakes and start to slide to the right and then right in the middle of the ‘blackmark ‘, flip it around hard to the left so when you stop you are looking back. Pretend that you are looking back at the jump, when your really looking back to see everyones expression. Sometimes I liked to do a triple fishtail, but sometimes the time it takes to do the triple fishtail, you can’t see the reaction from the massive jump.

  4. As far as no one else trying the feat after you, which is truly gratifying, it is even better when someone else tries it right behind you and wrecks big. This not only makes you “King of the neighborhood”, it ensures that no one else will even try it again, and that makes you a “Legend” for all time. They will be telling their grandchildren about the kid that jumped four blocks, and the consequences to everyone else who tried. (even though there was only one other attempt). Some times it will even be exaggerated, in the retelling, to 5 or 6 blocks with a triple fishtail finish, and this truly puts you in the record books.

  5. I feel ya, Scott. The only difference is that where I grew up there were no blackmarks because there was no asphalt. We kicked up plenty of dust and grass though.

  6. Wow…and all this time I thought you were out there working on the house…I can’t believe you’ve hidden this talent for so long. Send me a “show time” schedule, would ya? :o) Blogs look great…will check back soon :o)

  7. I can’t believe it! My wife not only checked my blog, but she left a comment! I just can’t decide if she likes it or if I’m being scolded for not working on the house enough. Sometimes it all runs together anyway.
    I love you darlin’
